WORKSHOP CONTENTS
The workshop is the second joint research workshop between University of Sydney Business School and Tongji University School of Economics and Management: Advancing Emerging Markets Research
Background and Purpose
• The Emerging Market Research Group (EMRG) recently proposed a partnership with Tongji University School of Economics and Management (Tongji SEM), a school with which the EMRG already has a vibrant research relationship.
• To showcase the current collaboration and research strength of both universities.
• Establish a platform for multi-disciplinary research to tap emerging issues in the contemporaneous business world.
• To promote and develop potential research collaboration opportunities within the two schools
• Lead to research grant applications and publication of high impact research papers in business/management.
• To enable the participants to network and deepen relationships with international colleagues.
The workshop will be divided into three sessions with the following themes:
• Session 1: Institutions and OFDI of Emerging Economy Firms
• Session 2: Interactions between firms in new globalization era
• Session 3: Socialization and Digitalization of Firms in International Business
PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES
FACULTY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY BUSINESS SCHOOL
Vikas Kumar (PhD Saint Louis University, St. Louis, USA) is Head of Discipline and Professor of International Business at the University of Sydney Business School. His previous appointments were at Bocconi University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Management, and as Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and Dunning Fellow at University of Reading. He is currently serving as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of International Management. He served as Editor in Chief of Journal of Asia Business Studies in 2019 and as Associate Editor at Asia Pacific Journal of Management from 2017-2019Vikas is interested in studying the internationalization strategies employed by firms from emerging markets such as India. His research involves understanding the unique aspects of the institutional and cultural context of emerging markets and the influence context has on firm strategies. His research has been published in Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Global Strategy Journal, Management International Review, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Management and Long Range Planning, among other journals in the field of international business and management. Vikas has co-edited a book on ‘Global outsourcing and offshoring’ published by Cambridge University Press and on ‘Emerging Market Firms’ published by Emerald. In a 2016 study published in the Journal of International Management, Vikas was ranked among the top 15 authors based on impact in the field of ‘emerging market firm internationalization’.
Huan Zhang is a lecturer (assistant professor) of the Discipline of International Business at the University of Sydney Business School. Huan’s current research focuses on the global strategy and non-market strategy of multinational enterprises in emerging markets context. He is particularly interested in how institutional dynamism influences firms' behaviour. His work has appeared in the Journal of International Business Studies, Global strategy Journal, Journal of International Management, Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings, and others. Huan obtained his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Renmin University of China and the master’s degree in political science from the University of Miami. He completed his PhD in Sun Yat-Sen University Business School (China) and co-trained with the University of Miami (USA). Huan is currently serving the Editorial Review Board of Management Organization Review and Cross Cultural & Strategic Management.
Roshni Ali Qureshi is a recent doctoral graduate and currently works as a lecturer at Monash University. Her research focuses on Family Businesses. She pursues different disciplines such as international business, corporate social responsibility, business ethics, marketing and accounting to understand the behaviour of family businesses. In addition, she is a non-executive managing director at her family owned businesses which operates in industries related to leather, meat and hospitality. A combination of these has facilitated her to connect theory with practice and unleash theoretical contributions in the field of family businesses.
FACULTY FROM TONGJI UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT
En Xie, PhD, is a Professor of Management at the School of Economics and Management, Tongji University, Shanghai City, China. His research interests include business strategy in emerging economies, strategic alliance networks, and international business. His research has been published in reputable academic journals like Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of World Business, International Business Review, and other leading management journals in China. He has presented his works at AOM, AIB, CIMaR, and refereed management conferences in China.
Nan Zhou is a Professor of Strategic Management and International Business at School of Economics and Management at Tongji University in China, and John H. Dunning Visiting Fellow for academic year 2020-2021 at University of Reading. She received her PhD degree from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, her master degree from National University of Singapore, and her bachelor degree from Tsinghua University. Before joining Tongji University, she worked for at Nankai University as an associate professor, Moscow School of Management Skolkovo as an assistant professor and also China Minsheng Bank as a senior research fellow. Her research addresses questions that intersect the fields of corporate strategy and international business, focusing primarily on understanding how strategic decisions such as product diversification and globalization are influenced by firm resources and institutional environments in the context of emerging markets. She is at the editorial review board of Journal of International Business Studies and Management International Review. Her publications have appeared in leading journals, such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Global Strategy Journal, British Journal of Management, among others. Her co-authored book ‘Rough Diamonds: Four Traits of Successful Breakout Firms in BRIC’ is published by JosseyBass/Wiley and is translated into Chinese.
Tianyu Gong is Assistant Professor of Management at School of Economics and Management in Tongji University. His research is in the area of formal and informal institutions in emerging markets, firm non-market strategy, and innovation.
