Title：Greenfield or Acquisition? The Role of Subnational Individualism-Collectivism in China

This paper aims to examine the effects of subnational individualism-collectivism culture on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) establishment mode in a host country, that is, greenfield versus acquisition. We propose that firms located in regions with high collectivism (individualism) tend to choose acquisition (greenfield) over greenfield (acquisition). This view is based on the fact that individualism highlights the control, autonomy, and self-concept, which can be achieved by greenfield whereas collectivism promotes the cooperation while sacrificing self-concept for group benefits. Using China as an empirical context, we operationalize the subnational individualism-collectivism with rice-wheat paddy distributions in China following a publication in Science and find support for our hypotheses. We also find the positive effect of subnational collectivism on the choice of acquisition to be stronger for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) than for non-SOEs but weaker for firms with high than those with low technological capability.
